چکیده

This paper proposes a sensor placement method for three-dimensional point source localization using multiple sensors. An observation model of multiple sensors and one source of unknown position is introduced. Given that model, the minimum number of sensors needed to localize the source is determined, and an optimal sensor placement is derived. The placement is optimal in the sense that it minimizes the effect of the measurement error on the localization error bound. The proposed placement is also shown to simplify the computational complexity. The theoretical results are experimentally evaluated through simulation. The simulation results reveal that the proposed placement significantly reduces the relative localization error.

Three Dimensional Localization of an Unknown Target Using Two Heterogeneous Sensors

Heterogeneous wireless sensor networks consist of some different types of sensor nodes deployed in a particular area. Different sensor types can measure different quantity of a source and using the combination of different measurement techniques, the minimum number of necessary sensors is reduced in localization problems. In this paper, we focus on the single source localization in a heterogene...

A New Technique for Acoustic Source Localization in an Anisotropic Plate without Knowing its Material Properties

The conventional triangulation technique cannot locate the acoustic source in an anisotropic plate because this technique requires the wave speed to be independent of the propagation direction which is not the case for an anisotropic plate. All methods, proposed so far for source localization in anisotropic plates, require either the knowledge of the direction dependent velocity profile or a de...

Sensor Placement for Microseismic Event Location

Mining operations can produce highly localized, low intensity earthquakes that are referred to as microseismic events. Monitoring of microseismic events is useful in predicting and comprehending hazards, and in evaluating the overall performance of a mine design. A robust localization algorithm is used to estimate the source position of the microseismic event by selecting the hypothesized sourc...

Source localization and sensor placement in environmental monitoring

In this paper we discuss two closely related problems arising in environmental monitoring. The first is the source localization problem linked to the question How can one find an unknown “contamination source”? The second is an associated sensor placement problem: Where should we place sensors that are capable of providing the necessary “adequate data” for that? Our approach is based on some co...

Model-based solution techniques for the source localization problem

The problem of locating sources in dynamical systems described by partial diierential equations (PDE) is a particular case of the more general class of inverse problems. Source localization problems are often approached using non-model-based techniques. By using a priori knowledge of system dynamics, model-based approaches to this problem can be developed , reducing the number of sensors requir...
